Sitting in the Dark Until the Light Comes Back On

Sarie's Thoughts·sarie taylor·Nov 20, 2025· 4 minutes

Have you ever had those days where it feels like someone’s switched the light off inside you?

You know the ones - nothing’s wrong exactly, but everything feels heavier, quieter, greyer. You can’t seem to reach the spark that usually helps you make sense of things. You try to “think your way out,” but the harder you try, the darker it gets.

I’ve had a lot of those moments over the years - through anxiety, burnout, and more recently through illness and recovery. And the single most comforting truth I’ve ever seen is this:

The light always comes back on. Always.

The Urge to Fumble for the Switch

When that light goes out, our first instinct is to panic. We start fumbling around the room, looking for the switch - searching for answers, Googling symptoms, replaying conversations, overanalysing what went wrong.

It’s understandable. Nobody likes the dark.

But what if the light isn’t broken?

What if it’s just temporarily dimmed because the system is doing what it’s designed to do - resetting, recalibrating, protecting?

Every human being experiences low moods, exhaustion, confusion. It’s part of how our minds regulate themselves. The dark moments are not mistakes; they’re pauses.

Sitting, Not Scrambling

Imagine you’re in a familiar room - you know where everything is. The light suddenly goes off. If you stay seated in your armchair, you’re fine. The room’s still the same, even if you can’t see it clearly for a while.

But if you jump up and start frantically searching for the light switch, you’ll trip over the furniture, bump your shin, maybe knock something over.

The more you scramble, the more chaos you create.

The same is true in our minds. When we rush to fix how we feel - trying to think our way back to peace - we just stir up more thought, more noise, more exhaustion.

Peace doesn’t come from rearranging the furniture. It comes from sitting quietly and letting our eyes adjust.

Darkness Isn’t the Absence of Wisdom

When our minds go quiet, it can feel like wisdom has disappeared. But wisdom never leaves. It’s the steady glow underneath the noise - the electricity running through even when the bulb flickers.

Sometimes the system just needs to rest. The same way your phone needs to recharge.

So when you can’t hear your inner calm, don’t assume it’s gone. It’s still there - it’s just muffled by tired thought. If you stop interfering, it comes back all on its own.

Trusting the System

We’ve all had those miraculous mornings when, after a messy night of overthinking, we wake up and suddenly everything feels lighter. The problem hasn’t changed - but we have.

That’s the system resetting. It’s built in. You didn’t do it - life did.

You don’t have to work on getting better. You can trust the design.

Even when the light’s out, the wiring’s still good.

When You Don’t Know What to Do

In the dark, clarity isn’t available - so stop looking for it. You’re not meant to make decisions or find deep meaning when you’re exhausted or overwhelmed.

The kindest thing you can do in those moments is nothing. Sit. Breathe. Have a shower. Feed yourself something small. Let life do what it does best - move forward, without your constant supervision.

The light doesn’t need convincing to come back. It just needs space.

From Darkness to Depth

I’ve come to see these darker times as moments of deepening, not disappearing.

The more I allow them, the more compassion I find - for myself, for others, for the human experience. Each “dark” season shows me that I can be okay even when I don’t feel okay.

And every time the light returns - which it always does - it’s a little brighter, a little steadier, because I didn’t fight it this time.

If You’re Sitting in the Dark Right Now

Please hear this: you’re not broken, and you’re not alone. The light is still within you, even if you can’t see it.

You don’t need to fix it, find it, or force it.

Just sit quietly and wait for it to return.

It always does.
