What Is The Unrestricted Model®?

sarie taylor·Jul 31, 2026· 13 minutes

Most people come across my work because there is something they would like to feel less of.

Less anxiety. Less overthinking. Less pressure. Less fear about what might happen next.

Perhaps you are finding it difficult to make a decision without going over every possible outcome. Maybe you are frightened by the way anxiety feels in your body, or you have become exhausted from constantly trying to work out what is wrong and how to put it right.

You might have a life that looks absolutely fine from the outside and still find yourself wondering why everything feels so difficult on the inside.

The Unrestricted Model® helps us understand these experiences differently.

It is a framework for understanding how our human experience works, how thought and feeling become so convincing, why fear can begin making our decisions for us, and why we can lose sight of the wellbeing and resilience that are already within us.

The purpose of the model is not to turn you into a different person. It helps you see yourself, your mind and your experience more clearly, so that you can stop being unnecessarily restricted by fear and misunderstanding.

Why I Created The Unrestricted Model®

The Unrestricted Model® has its foundations in the Three Principles understanding originally shared by Sydney Banks.

The Three Principles point towards Mind, Thought and Consciousness and offer a simple explanation of how our experience of life is created. You do not need to study those words, memorise definitions or turn any of this into an intellectual exercise.

In fact, trying too hard to understand everything can sometimes take us further into the very noise we are hoping to escape.

Over many years of working with people, I noticed the same themes appearing in different forms. Someone might arrive talking about panic attacks, while someone else arrives talking about procrastination in their business. One person might feel unable to leave the house, while another feels unable to publish a post, make a decision or have a difficult conversation.

On the surface, their lives and circumstances may look completely different. Underneath, they are often getting caught in the same misunderstandings about thought, fear, uncertainty, safety and their own ability to cope.

I created The Unrestricted Model® to give people a practical way of exploring these themes.

It brings the simplicity of the understanding into the situations we actually face in everyday life. Relationships, parenting, health, anxiety, work, business, money, visibility and all the ordinary moments in which our thinking can become very loud and persuasive.

What Does “Unrestricted” Mean?

Living unrestricted does not mean you never feel anxious, uncertain, upset or afraid.

We are human beings. Our moods change. Our thinking changes. We will sometimes become caught up, react badly, doubt ourselves or spend far too long trying to solve something in our heads.

The change comes from understanding what is happening.

When you understand that a frightening thought is creating a frightening experience in that moment, the thought can begin to lose some of its authority. You become less likely to treat every uncomfortable feeling as an emergency or every fearful prediction as useful information.

Thought can feel incredibly real. A real feeling, however, does not automatically tell us that the story behind it is true.

As this understanding becomes clearer, people often find that they recover more quickly when they do get caught up. They become less frightened of their own thoughts and feelings. They begin trusting themselves again, making decisions with more clarity and allowing life to become bigger.

This is what I mean by unrestricted.

You still experience being human, but fear no longer gets to run the whole show.

The Four Layers of The Unrestricted Model®

The Unrestricted Model® is made up of four connected layers: SAFE, SELF, CORE and FREE.

Unrestricted 6 months

These layers are not stages that you must complete perfectly or another checklist to use when you feel anxious. They give us different places from which to explore how restriction is created and how understanding allows it to soften.

SAFE: Secure and Fulfilled Every Day

SAFE is the foundation of the model.

Many people spend their lives trying to create enough external certainty to finally feel safe. They believe they will relax once they know what is going to happen, once their health feels more predictable, once their relationship is secure, once the business earns enough or once everybody around them is okay.

The difficulty is that life cannot offer us that level of certainty.

Things change. People change. Plans go wrong. Bodies feel different from one day to the next. Businesses have quieter months. Other people make decisions we cannot control.

When our safety depends entirely on the outside world behaving as we would like it to, we are left constantly monitoring, preparing and trying to stay one step ahead.

SAFE points us back towards internal safety.

This does not mean believing that nothing difficult will ever happen. It means beginning to understand that your wellbeing and resilience are not handed to you by perfect circumstances.

You do not need certainty to be okay.

You may not always feel okay, especially when your thinking is busy or your circumstances are genuinely difficult, but your capacity to settle, respond and find your way has not disappeared.

SELF: Stability, Elevation, Limitless and Fearless

SELF is about reconnecting with who you are underneath the noise, pressure and ideas you have collected about who you should be.

Stability is the grounding that remains available even when life feels unsettled. It is not created by controlling every outcome. It develops as you begin trusting that you can meet life as it arrives.

Elevation relates to awareness. As our awareness increases, we begin noticing when we are caught in thought, when fear has taken over or when we are judging ourselves from a low state of mind. That awareness creates space without requiring us to force a different feeling.

Limitless explores the restrictions we create through our own thinking. We can become convinced there is only one correct choice, one acceptable way to do something or one version of ourselves that will be good enough. When the mind becomes quieter, more possibilities often become visible.

Fearless does not mean the complete absence of fear. Fear is part of being human and can be useful when we are responding to genuine danger. The restriction appears when imagined danger, future predictions and anxious thinking begin deciding how we live.

Within the model, fearless means learning to fear less. Fear may still speak, but it does not automatically need obeying.

CORE: Creativity, Ownership, Resilience and Edge

CORE explores what becomes available when we are less preoccupied with protecting, controlling and proving ourselves.

Creativity is not limited to people who can paint, write or make beautiful things. Creativity is the fresh thinking and new possibility that naturally appear when we are not trying to force an answer from an overwhelmed mind.

Ownership means recognising our part in the experience we are creating. This is not about blaming ourselves for difficult circumstances. It is the freedom that comes from seeing that we are experiencing those circumstances through our own thinking in each moment.

When we believe that another person, a business problem or an uncertain future has direct control over how we feel, we can feel powerless. Understanding the inside-out nature of experience gives some of that power back.

Resilience is something I believe we are born with. It is not reserved for people who appear strong or cope perfectly. We see resilience throughout nature and within the human body, but we often forget that it exists within our psychological experience too.

Edge is the courage to move before every doubt has disappeared. It allows us to speak, create, decide and act without waiting to become a permanently confident version of ourselves.

Often, clarity arrives through movement. We rarely think ourselves into complete certainty first.

FREE: Freewill, Reflection, Expression and Execution

FREE is where understanding begins showing up more fully in the way we live.

Freewill reminds us that we have choices, particularly in how we respond. We cannot control every thought, feeling, circumstance or other person, but we can begin noticing when we are handing our choices over to fear.

Reflection allows us to see our patterns without turning them into evidence that something is wrong with us. We might notice that we overcommit, compare ourselves, withdraw when we feel uncertain or keep waiting for permission.

When reflection happens without harsh judgement, we are much more likely to see something useful.

Expression is about allowing ourselves to be seen more honestly and imperfectly. So many people edit themselves before they have even begun. They rehearse conversations, rewrite posts repeatedly or try to work out the version of themselves other people will approve of.

As self-trust grows, expression becomes more natural.

Execution is where insight becomes lived experience. We begin taking the step, having the conversation, publishing the work or making the decision before confidence has arrived to give us a signed permission slip.

We stop waiting for a feeling to tell us we are ready and begin engaging with the life that is already here.

How Does The Unrestricted Model® Help With Anxiety and Overthinking?

Anxiety often becomes more frightening when we misunderstand what it means.

A physical sensation can be interpreted as danger. A thought can feel like a warning. Uncertainty can begin to feel unsafe, and overthinking can appear to be the responsible way to protect ourselves.

This creates a cycle in which we experience an uncomfortable thought or feeling and then become frightened by the fact that it is there.

The Unrestricted Model® helps us become more curious about that cycle.

When we understand that our feelings are giving us information about the thinking we are experiencing in that moment, rather than always giving us factual information about the outside world, we can begin responding differently.

We do not have to argue with every thought or find a technique to remove it. Thoughts naturally change when we leave them alone.

Imagine a snow globe that has been shaken. The picture inside has not disappeared, but we cannot see it clearly while everything is swirling around.

If we continue shaking it because we are desperate for it to settle, we keep the storm going. When we put it down, the snow begins to fall by itself.

Our minds work in a very similar way.

Clarity is still there when our thinking is busy. We may simply be unable to see it for a while.

You can read more about this in how overthinking keeps the mind busy  and why anxiety can feel so physically frightening

The Unrestricted Model® in Life and Business

The same understanding applies whether somebody arrives because of anxiety, a relationship difficulty or a business problem.

Fear of panic can stop someone going on holiday. Fear of judgement can stop someone becoming visible in their business.

The expression looks different, but both experiences can be created through thought that has begun to feel convincing, urgent and important.

In business, this may look like perfectionism, procrastination, people pleasing, overworking, imposter syndrome or constantly changing direction. We may tell ourselves we need more confidence, a better plan or another qualification before we can move.

In everyday life, it may look like worrying about our health, needing reassurance, avoiding uncertainty, replaying conversations or trying to predict how we will feel in situations that have not happened yet.

The Unrestricted Model® helps us see what sits underneath these patterns.

When we become less frightened of uncertainty and less dependent on fearful thinking for guidance, we often find that decisions become simpler. We communicate more honestly. We become more creative and willing to move.

Life and business are not separate from our human experience. We take the same mind into both.

Pressing Play on Life

Running throughout the whole of The Unrestricted Model® is the invitation to press play.

We often postpone our lives without fully realising it.

We will enjoy ourselves when the anxiety has gone. We will start the business when we feel confident. We will rest when everything is finished. We will speak up when we know exactly how it will be received.

The problem is that the mind can always find another condition to add.

Pressing play means returning to the life that is happening now. It does not require the house to be tidy, your thoughts to be quiet or your mood to be perfect.

You can press play when you are uncertain. You can press play on an ordinary Tuesday when nothing feels particularly inspiring. You can press play while life is still messy and unresolved.

Being present was never meant to become another thing you had to perform well.

It is simply the willingness to come back and take part in your own life.

What Changes Through The Unrestricted Model®?

The Unrestricted Model® does not promise a life without difficult thoughts, feelings or circumstances.

What begins to change is the relationship we have with them.

A thought may still appear without becoming a week-long investigation. Fear may still arise without being handed every decision. A low mood may move through without becoming a judgement about who we are or how well we are doing.

As understanding deepens, people often discover that they were never as broken, fragile or incapable as they had believed.

There is wellbeing underneath the noise.

There is resilience within you even when you cannot currently feel it.

There is wisdom available that does not shout, panic or demand an immediate answer.

The Unrestricted Model® helps you recognise those things again, so you can stop waiting for your mind, your feelings or your circumstances to become perfect before you begin living.

Because your life is already happening.

Perhaps it is time to press play.
